چکیده

A nanoscale thermal anemometry probe (NSTAP) has been developed to measure velocity fluctuations at ultra-small scales. The sensing element is a free-standing platinum nanoscale wire, 100 nm× 2 μm× 60 μm, suspended between two currentcarrying contacts and the sensor is an order of magnitude smaller than presently available commercial hot wires. The probe is constructed using standard semiconductor and MEMS manufacturing methods, which enables many probes to be manufactured simultaneously. Measurements were performed in grid-generated turbulence and compared to conventional hot-wire probes with a range of sensor lengths. The results demonstrate that the NSTAP behaves similarly to conventional hot-wire probes but with better spatial resolution and faster temporal response. The results are used to investigate spatial filtering effects, including the impact of spatial filtering on the probability density of velocity and velocity increment statistics.

Design and Characteristics of New Test Facility for Flat Plate Boundary Layer Research

Preliminary results for a new flat plate test facility are presented here in the form of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), flow visualisation, pressure measurements and thermal anemometry. The results from the CFD and flow visualisation show the effectiveness of the plate design, with the trailing edge flap anchoring the stagnation point on the working surface and reducing the extent of the l...

Turbulent pipe flow at extreme Reynolds numbers.

Both the inherent intractability and complex beauty of turbulence reside in its large range of physical and temporal scales. This range of scales is captured by the Reynolds number, which in nature and in many engineering applications can be as large as 10(5)-10(6). Here, we report turbulence measurements over an unprecedented range of Reynolds numbers using a unique combination of a high-press...

Spatial resolution correction for hot-wire anemometry in wall turbulence

We investigate spatial resolution issues in hot-wire anemometry measurements of turbulence intensity and energy spectra. Single normal hot-wire measurements are simulated by means of filtering direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent channel flow at Res 1⁄4 934. Through analysis of the two-dimensional energy spectra from the DNS, the attenuation of the small-scale energy levels is documen...

An Inter-Comparison Study of Multi- and DBS Lidar Measurements in Complex Terrain

Wind measurements using classical profiling lidars suffer from systematic measurement errors in complex terrain. Moreover, their ability to measure turbulence quantities is unsatisfactory for wind-energy applications. This paper presents results from a measurement campaign during which multiple WindScanners were focused on one point next to a reference mast in complex terrain. This multi-lidar ...

Turbulent Transport Characteristics in a Low-speed Boundary Layer Subjected to Adverse Pressure

Thermal anemometry measurements were performed to evaluate the heat and momentum transport characteristics of wall turbulence over a slightly heated, smooth flat plate with a stepchange in wall temperature. Single-wire, X-probe and triple-wire sensors were employed to measure mean and fluctuating velocity and temperature as well as Reynolds stress and heat flux productions. “Equilibrium” bounda...
